Glasgow Glen Farm officially opened to make Island’s artisanal cheese

Originally released by Innovation PEI on October 20, 2014

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and PEI Minister of Agriculture and Forestry George Webster recently announced combined funding of $269,500 to help Glasgow Glen Farm open its new operation.

Glasgow Glen Farm has officially opened its cheese-making facility in New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island. The expansion will allow the company to grow its product line and create new artisan cheeses that were not already available in the province, as well continue to make the famous “Cheese Lady’s Gouda.”

Quick Facts:

  • The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, provided funding of $85,000 to help purchase new equipment for the facility. The Government of Prince Edward Island, through the Department of Agriculture and Forestry Growing Forward 2 (a joint initiative of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) and Innovation PEI, provided an additional $34,500. Finance PEI provided a term loan of $150,000 to support this expansion.
  • Glasgow Glen Farm hosted an official opening Friday, October 17th for people to try the new products and visit the new facility.
  • This farm is the only artisanal cheesemaker in Prince Edward Island and will offer different varieties of cheese, including the Cheese Lady’s Gouda as well as feta, and blue cheeses in the future.

Quotes:

“This new equipment will contribute to making some of the most unique cheeses this Island has to offer. Our Government recognizes that diversifying local offerings will expand the tourism and agri-food sectors and strengthen our economy. I am very pleased to announce our investment for Glasgow Glen Farm, and look forward to watching them grow in the artisanal cheese market.”
~The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency)

“Prince Edward Island continues to be recognized for the high quality food products delivered to consumers by our hard working Island producers. It is important, as a government, to continue to support innovation and expansion in our agriculture sector and help our local producers reach new markets.”
